General Motors announced that they have broken their previous Buick sales record, which was set in 1984, by selling just over a million cars in 2013.

A lot of the brand’s success had to do with its popularity in China, but North Americans are once again embracing the auto as well.

Chinese buyers helped sales in that country spike 16 percent over the previous year.

In the US, enough car buyers, many of who had never purchased a GM before, chose a Buick and pushed sales up 14 percent above their 2012 mark.

In fact, last year’s American sales figures were double what they were in 2009.

While the sheer number of cars sold in China was many times greater than all of those delivered in the entirety of North America, Mexico by far had the biggest percentage bump.

There, sales went up a whopping 107 percent in the same time frame.

So, what are people buying?

In China it’s both the GL8 and the Excelle, two cars sold only in that country. The Excelle, however, is similar to the Verano, which is available in the US.

American buyers showed a great fondness for the Encore, a subcompact crossover.
