The Writers Guild of America has announced the nominations for their annual awards and "American Hustle" is one of the five films up for best original screenplay. It will go up against Woody Allen's reversal of fortune tale "Blue Jasmine," the portrait of an unlikely AIDS treatment activist in "Dallas Buyers Club," the virtual love story "Her," and the rueful look at life in the heartland in "Nebraska."

On the adapted screenplay side, Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" got a nod. It will compete against tale of family dysfunction "August: Osage County," Richard Linklater's take on a couple "Before Midnight," the true story of a Somali pirate attack "Captain Phillips," and the tale of brotherhood among Navy SEALs in Afghanistan "Lone Survivor."

A notable exclusion from the five nominees for best adapted screenplay was "12 Years a Slave," a film based on the memoirs of a man kidnapped and sold into slavery in pre-Civil War American.
