At least one person has been killed after an earthquake struck southern Iran, the country’s state television reported. Over 30 were injured in the quake which measured 5.5 on the Richter scale
Buildings were damaged, electricity lines were down and there was panic in the streets followed the early morning tremor.
Authorities said rescue workers responded quickly and power has been restored to the area. There have been no reports of aftershocks.
The quake hit Bastok a town of 50,000 people which lies about 1,200 kilometres south of the capital Tehran.
Iran sits on major geological faultlines and has suffered several big earthquakes in recent years.
The most powerful in over 50 years happened last April when dozens were killed and over 800 injured in a remote area close to the Pakistan border.
