Septic and sewer problems, while never considered a good thing, typically are an easy enough fix. However, it’s not so simple in Derby, UK.

Although the city is thought to have the most blocked sewers in the East Midlands, a recent blockage involved a vast amount of forks and spoons. In the area of Chaddesden, hundreds of cutlery pieces, some rusted brown, others sparkly silver, had been flushed down toilets, leaving workers at Severn Trent responsible for the clean up and removal efforts.

The customer operations manager at the company is baffled to say the least, stating “How on earth people have managed to flush this amount of cutlery, I don’t know. You wouldn’t think knives and forks would fit down a toilet, but this is just one example of amazing things we find blocking the sewers.”

The silverware blockage, along with the many other ones Derby has faced in recent times, is blamed on local residents abusing the sewer system, using it for items that should be destined for a trash can.
