A quiet New Year at the hospital in Grenoble, France, where Formula One racing star Michael Schumacher is in stable condition.

The seven-time world champion is battling for his life after slamming his head against a rock while skiing at a resort on Sunday.

His agent, Sabine Kehm, told journalists that they're monitoring his condition closely.

"Michael's condition has been carefully supervised throughout the night, and the condition remained stable all of the night and the condition remains stable this morning. That is for the moment good news but I repeat this is just for the moment because Michael's injury is heavy and the overall situation is critical."

Doctors carried out an operation late Monday to treat the effects of internal bleeding within Schumacher's skull.

Kehm also urged journalists to respect the 44-year-old German's privacy.
