The Canadian post office announced it will slowly be phasing out door-to-door letter delivery.
Instead, they will be focusing on the more lucrative aspect of home service – packages coming from online merchants.
Also announced was the plan to increase postage costs.
They cited several reasons for the changes, the largest being that they simply can’t afford to keep doing business as they have been.
At present, the service delivers mail directly to 5.1 million individual households in urban areas, which accounts for about a third of the mail recipients.
The plan going forward is to phase out the door-to-door delivery over the next five years and instead establish a community mailbox system.
They estimate that group delivery will cost about a third of what it does to drop the mail off at each house.
Another reason the Canadian post office is considering cuts to its operations is that they just don’t deliver as much mail as they used to - about a billion pieces less than they did in 2006.
Unfortunately, the proposed changes will result in the cutting of 6 to 8 thousand jobs.
