The “cartoneros” of the Argentinean capital Buenos Aires search through rubbish to find goods that can be used or recycled.
Pope Francis, who hails from Argentina, has recorded a video in support of those who make use of the waste that others leave behind.
“We cannot afford the luxury of looking down on leftovers. We are living in a throw-away culture where we easily throw out not only things, but people too,” the pope said in the video.
Pope Francis has been a champion of the “cartoneros” since his time as Archbishop of Buenos Aires.
Elected to the papacy in March, Francis has become known world-wide for his simple habits and low-key approach to the role.
