A motorist there, recently received a citation for talking, not on a phone, but to a passenger that was in the same vehicle. The fine, which amounted to about $55, was for distraction, as the male driver, named Armando reportedly took his eyes of the road to look at the other car occupant.
According to the officer who pulled him over, he had directed his eyes away from the street numerous times. Armando stated “I was talking with my friend, a normal conversation. It was 11am, there were no cars on the road and I wasn't speeding. There was nothing and no one.”
The story has garnered quite a bit of local media attention. Many readers believe the citation was ridiculous, but others pointed out the dangers of distracted driving.
Officials at the Civil Guard union said the fine was justified, however the officer could have gotten away with giving Armando a verbal warning. The offense is not considered to be serious, which means Armando will not have any points deducted from his license.
