Egyptian police have stormed the office of a human rights organisation in Cairo, to arrest a democracy campaigner.
Thursday’s early morning raid, at the Egyptian
Centre for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR), has been condemned by activist groups. They claim it is part of a push to crush dissent.
Police targeted the office to arrest Mohamed
Adel, according to a security official.
Adel is wanted in connection with protests
against a law that heavily restricts the right to
demonstrate.
A video released by the organisation showed
the aftermath of the police raid, during which
computers and other equipment were
confiscated, according to ECESR staff.
In a statement, 10 Egyptian civil society groupssaid five other activists were also detained but later released, describing the midnight raid as an “unprecedented escalation.”
