The 104-year-old spends about 40 hours each week volunteering to help students with both physical and mental disabilities. Washington D.C. recently held an honor ceremony to celebrate her work.
Mayor Vincent Gray handed the elderly woman a volunteer community service award for her 20 years spent working with special needs children. McLaurin is referred to as a foster grandparent.
She teaches the kids and also feeds and raises them. When she got up to the microphone to accept her award, she was greeted by a standing ovation. McLaurin thanked everyone in the crowd for their support and recognition.
She wore tennis shoes to the event, which turned out to be symbolic in its own way. McLaurin walked to the event just like she walks to the Sharpe School everyday which is where she volunteers.
McLaurin, who will turn 105 in March of 2014, claimed that she will continue on being a foster grandmother as long as the school will allow her to.
