Police in North Chicago are asking for donations and volunteers to step forward in an effort to take care of 30 dogs that were all recently found together in a tiny one bedroom apartment.
Police in North Chicago are asking for donations and volunteers to step forward in an effort to take care of 30 dogs that were all recently found together in a tiny one bedroom apartment.
Animal control officers were responsible for making the initial discovery involving the more than two dozen Chihuahuas. Investigators believe the owner of the dogs began breeding and the number of puppies got out of hand far too quickly.
Approximately 75 percent of the dogs were suffering from mange. Some of them had developed infections and were severely dehydrated. Animal control authorities were tipped off about the home after an anonymous complaint came in.
Police said the living conditions inside the apartment were deplorable. Urine and feces covered the floor and there was dog food everywhere.
The owner of the animals has not yet been named but legal charges are pending. Local veterinarians have stepped forward to treat the animals and its hoped all of them will soon be handed over to rescue organizations and forever homes.
The dogs are now in a heated kennel inside the North Chicago Police Department.
