Island’s Satellite Image Looks Like Broken Heart

Recent Google Earth images show what looks like two big bandages over this tiny heart-shaped Croatian island, making it the second most liked in a satellite image contest by DigitalGlobe.

Also known as the “Lover’s Island”, the tiny Croatian isle of Galesnjak boasts that “it is the most heart-shaped naturally formed island in the world.” Despite images from February 2013 showing what looks like two big bandages over it, it is currently the second most liked in a satellite image contest by DigitalGlobe.

The two bandaged scars reflect the areas where the land has been bulldozed to make way for romantic walking paths to be planted with 250 olive trees. The owners also plan to build a dock for boats arriving at the island.

According to the island’s co-owner Tonci Juresco, they are remodeling to accommodate all the requests for weddings to be hosted there. He said, “The island will be more beautiful than it was.”

Another family member and co-owner Vlado Juresko describes it as the ideal getaway for any couple, explaining, “Nobody lives there so if lovers really do want to spend time alone it's the perfect desert island.”

Measuring only 130,000 square yards and surrounded by clear blue Adriatic waters, the island’s heart shape was first documented on the Napolean Maps of Dalmatia in 1802.
