Police in Frederick, Maryland recently busted a couple who allegedly swiped grocery carts for the intention of cashing them in for scrap metal.

Clever criminals can find value in pretty much anything. Police in Frederick, Maryland recently busted a couple who allegedly swiped grocery carts for the intention of cashing them in for scrap metal.

Richard Johnson and his wife Haydee Melendez weren't too sly about the thefts. Cops were alerted the pair was up to something suspicious after an officer on patrol drove by the Country Hill Apartments and noticed a pickup truck holding several shopping carts in the bed.

The cop pulled the vehicle over and pummeled the driver with questions. Eventually 48-year-old Johnson along with his spouse and passenger in the truck, 42-year-old Melendez admitted to stealing the carts from a supermarket for scrap metal.

The pair was immediately arrested and taken to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center. They were both charged with ‘Theft Less Than $1,000 and Theft Scheme Less Than $1,000’.

The wife is being held on $3,000 bail, while Johnson is sitting in jail on $,5,000 bail.
