Just weeks after Timbuktu was freed from the control of radical Islamists last February, tensions between the lighter-skinned Arabs and the rest of the population began to rise. Many saw the Arab families as being in cahoots with the armed rebels, and hundreds of Arab families fled. At the time, the few remaining men who refused to leave professed their innocence and trusted that it would protect them. But that was not to be.
