Ahmed Kathrada, a dear friend of Nelson Mandela.
He spent 26 years behind bars, just one year short of Mandela's term. Both were veterans in the struggle against apartheid.
In a funeral service in Qunu, Kathrada addressed his friend of 67 years, calling him their mutual nickname Madala.

"What do we say to you, Madala, in these days? The last final moments together, before you exit the public stage. Madala your abundant reserves of love, simplicity, honesty service care, forgiveness, justice, will continue serve as an example for South Africa."
He said Mandela has joined the A-team of the African National Congress who have departed, including Walter Sisulu and Oliver Tambo.
