Super Smash Brothers: Project M Fixes Nintendo's Mistakes

2013-12-11 100

On this episode on The Rundown, we talk about the best thing to happen to Super Smash Brothers since Melee was released in 2001.

Project M. What is Project M, you ask? In short, it’s a fan-developed game mod for Super Smash Brothers: Brawl. I always thought that game was ridiculously imbalanced, and the folks  behind Project M agreed - so they did something about it.

This week, the group has released version 3.0 of their modification, chock full of contributions from over 100 developers across the globe. What the team was trying to do was take Brawl and transform it from a dumbed-down experience plagued by unfair blitz characters like MetaKnight and Olimar.

Stupid Pikmin…Ike never stood a chance.

Project M is supposed to fix issues like this, attempting to bring a more balanced cast of characters to the fray. That is good news for all Brawl players - with luck, your favorite character will actually have a chance in competitive play. Unless you play as Ganondorf, in which case...what is wrong with you?

Ganondorf aside, the new mechanics and improved characters look fantastic, especially considering Brawl is almost six years old. There are new new stages and costumes for all of the characters, but the main focus is on gameplay tweaks, all in the pursuit of balance.

And the best thing about this? You can download the mod onto an SD card and slip it into your console.

Yep. That’s it. No hacking, no workarounds, no hardware issues - just plug and play. That will be the key - making this accessible to the masses. Hey, I love Super Smash, but...not enough to rip apart a Wii to play mods. Perhaps a side by side comparison is in order.
