Only hours before the death of Nelson Mandela was announced, the eagerly anticipated biopic “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” opened in London in the presence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Directed by Justin Chadwick, the film traces Nelson Mandela’s life from his childhood in a remote part of rural South Africa to his 27-year imprisonment and his election as the country’s first black president.
Just after the screening, Prince William reacted to the announcement of Nelson Mandela’s death.
“I just want to say that it’s obviously extremely sad and tragic news. We’re just reminded of what an extraordinary and inspiring man Nelson Mandela was and my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family right now.”
“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” was recently released in South Africa where it has broken box office records.
It is on release now across Europe.
