On a quiet street in Benghazi, a bloody reminder of the chaos that reigns in parts of Libya.

Just hours before, officials say gunmen shot and killed American Roni Smith as he was jogging.

Smith was a chemistry teacher working at the city's international school.

The school's director, Adel al Mansouri, confirmed the death.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DIRECTOR OF THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL BENGHAZI, ADEL AL MANSOURI, SAYING:

"We are sorry about this loss. May his soul rest in peace. He loved Benghazi, but unfortunately he was one of the many victims who are being killed these days."

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the killing.

In a written statement, the State Department said, quote, "We offer our condolences to the victim's loved ones. We are in contact with the family and are providing all appropriate consular assistance."
