Looting rife in Argentine city of Cordoba as police take strike action

With the police on strike, chaos is rife in the central-Argentine city of Cordoba.

One man has reportedly been killed and up to 60 people injured as looters ransacked shops and supermarkets in the country’s second most populated city.

Officials claim the victim, who was shot in the chest while riding his motorcycle, had nothing to do with the looting. It seems he was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The disruption followed a “walkout” by police following a failure to resolve a wage dispute, Merco Press reports.

Police officers had apparently gathered inside the police station, refusing to work until their salaries were raised to 13,000 pesos, around €1,500.

Many businesses and banks remain closed for the time being. Cordoba’s state governor has also ordered the temporary closure of schools and many public buildings.
