The Thai government has ordered police to remove barricades outside police and government headquarters and to allow protesters inside.

A spokesperson said the government wanted to avoid any further confrontation and violence.

The move followed clashes over the weekend and on Monday where anti-government protesters tried to storm the prime minister’s office.

The Thai prime minister has rejected protesters’ demands that she step down. Yingluck Shinawatra said it would be unconstitutional but that she was open to negotiations.

The demonstrators accuse Ms Yingluck’s government of being controlled by her brother, ousted leader Thaksin Shinawatra and want to replace it with a n unelected ‘people’s council.’
