Online comics sparks deep-sea fishing debate in France

The deep sea fishing debate has stepped up a notch in France after illustrator Pénélope Bagieu published this comic on her blog, denouncing the intensive fishing and its devastating impact on the ecosystem, through her colourful drawings and satirical text. She says fishing boats are contributing to the destruction of coral reefs and hundreds of species of marine life. She is also urging readers to sign a petition against deep-sea fishing.
The online comic is enjoying great success and the petition has garnered around 700,000 signatures and counting. Environmental organization Bloom is calling for the implementation of the European Commission’s proposal to ban deep sea trawling. The French organization, which has been working to protect oceans for the past ten years, has published several investigations, pointing the finger at lobbies and industrial fishing, highlighting what it considers to be their lack of economic and ecological sense.

And now it’s reached the public stage, supporters of deep sea fishing have now joined the debate. France’s leading fishing vessel owner, Scapêche, has posted a statement on its website, claiming this type of fishing actually has a very limited environmental impact and generates a lot of jobs. The communiqué has certainly fueled the battle for public opinion ahead of the crucial European Parliament vote on December 10th.
