Newly appointed U.S. ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy received a surprise birthday greeting during a luncheon at the American Chamber of Commerce.
Her birthday was celebrated by nearly 500 people and media attending the luncheon in Tokyo, where they all sang her Happy Birthday in unison.
The embarrassed-looking Kennedy later said she had never had such a big birthday party before.
Kennedy is the first female U.S. ambassador to Japan and turned 55 years old on Wednesday.
Kennedy has been the center of intense media attention since she arrived in Japan, with Japanese media commenting everything about her from her background to her fashion.
