On Saturday 27th July 2013, Escapade joined revellers in Cumbria to coordinate the Guinness World Record attempt for The Largest Gathering Of People Dressed As Superman -- and then smashed it!
Providing free costumes for those taking part, festival-goers at Kendal Calling were invited to drop by the Escapade stall to collect their outfit (supplies for which ran out in near-record time!) and to donate to UK charity Help For Heroes. Then, at 1pm, the growing numbers filed into Kendal's 'Glow Tent' and the activities began...
Backed by a selection of classic & current chart hits, the Supercrowd took part in competitions conducted from the stage including awards for the oldest (73!) and youngest (10 months!) Supermen, posedowns, crowdsurfing races, a tug of war and a group participation masterclass in how to dance to the 'Superman Song' by Black Lace.
Finally, the time came for the big moment. Joined on-stage by two official Guinness World Records adjudicators who kept count for 5 minutes (the time needed to qualify the attempt), the announcement came that we had not just been successful but WAY exceeded the last record's number of 566 -- with 867 people dressed as Superman present, we broke the previous Guinness World Record by over 150%!
Celebrations were also in order given that the day of the event was also Escapade's own CEO Bhupendra Maisuria 44th birthday who, keen to make a day of it, decided to double the amount received for Help For Heroes on the day and bringing it up to an amazing £1,000.66.
We at Escapade would like to thank all of the superheroes to took part in making a bit of history, providing well needed funds for a worthy charity and bringing yet another world record safely into British hands.
