The 2,460 metre-high mount Sinabung spewed more volcanic material into air on Monday (November 25) after Indonesia's government increased its alert status to highest level.
The government increased the volcano's status on Sunday (November 24) because of increasing activity of the volcano which has lain dormant for four centuries.
Authorities are providing more temporary shelters for increasing numbers of villagers leaving their homes in the area.
The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) put the volcano status on its highest status, warning people not to enter within a five kilometres radius of the the crater.
Indonesia lies on the so-called the "Pacific Ring of Fire" with nearly 130 active volcanoes, more than any other country.
