A couple in Brick, New Jersey was recently sentenced for abusing a 17-year-old dog named Sammy. 43-year-old Shauna Morgan and her partner, 56-year-old Keith Morgan admitted to committing the cruel acts.

Earlier this year, Keith Morgan took Sammy the cocker spaniel to a local shelter. The dog was covered in waste. He claimed the animal had been abandoned in a trash bag, however it was later discovered the Morgans were the owners.

Sammy was in very poor health from severe neglect. The couple who appeared in court together were sentenced to six months behind bars and 30 days of community service.

They were also ordered to pay over 13 thousand dollars in restitution and a $1,000 fine. Judge Robert LePore stated “Unless these individuals are imprisoned for their depraved, cruel and heinous conduct, such acts of animal cruelty will continue worldwide. The lack of care provided to Sammy was inexcusable.”

The judge hopes the maximum sentencing would send a message across the world that animal cruelty must be addressed properly. The couple will also not be able to own a pet, ever.

Sammy has since regained his health and is now living with a new, deserving family.
