Seventy-eight-year-old Sanna Biddau has her neighbour to thank for helping her escape her flooded home in the cyclone-battered town of Olbia, Sardinia.

Biddau said: “She took me in her arms, putting herself at risk of falling into the water. I was scared about that. I don’t know if I was heavy or light for her. We went to the gate and then she went back to save my daughter.

Her saviour, Martina Feick, 31, even returned to rescue the beloved family dog.

Feick, who hails from Germany, said she was shocked by all the attention she was getting, saying: “I wouldn’t say that I am a heroine, I’d say I just helped somebody. I would always do it again.”
