Detroit state trooper shoots deer in head

A Michigan state trooper was shown shooting a deer with a handgun at point blank range in a video that went viral online.

Details of the event are sparse, but the video clearly shows a deer caught in the headlights of the state trooper's car. The trooper in the vehicle makes several attempts to chase the deer away, but the creature refused to budge. The policeman honked his horn, banged on the hood of the car, rolled slowly into the animal's direction, set off the siren and yelled at the deer. Another officer who was outside the vehicle throughout the duration of the video came and shone his flashlight on the animal, but the creature was unmoved.

In the end, the officer in the car got out, walked up to the animal, and shot him in the head with his handgun. The small deer collapsed onto its knees, then toppled over to one side. Its legs and tail fluttered before it stopped moving.

A careful listening of the video indicates that the deer had been injured, possibly with a broken ankle, according to one voice heard. The men closest to the video camera can be heard asking the policeman if they will put down the deer, and he confirms that the animal was injured.

A report by Fox 2 in Detroit claims that the policemen were in the right to kill the deer, despite the graphic scene depicted in the video. It also explained that the city's resources are strapped and that services such as animal control would have been very slow to respond, or possibly unable to respond at all.
