She had been lying in bed when she woke up to find an intruder standing in her room. The suspect forcibly put a pillow over her face and repeatedly told her to “shut up”.
Phelps refused to comply with the burglar’s demands. She told him she was out of money and couldn’t remember what she did with her purse. When he attempted to pull her out of bed and put her shoes on because she told him she was unable to walk, Phelps quickly lifted her foot and kicked the suspect in the face.
During this time, the defiant homeowner had scanned her surroundings for anything that could help when she saw her Life Alert monitor. She quickly snatched it and hit the red button alerting the intruder that she had notified authorities of an emergency.
The culprit immediately fled the scene. He did manage to steal Phelps’ firearm which she had kept near the bed. Police have not yet been able to locate the suspect.
