At first glance, communities like the one centered out of Sunburst Sanctuary do not seem like typical charitable service organizations. Many people do not realize that groups such as these participate in community service. In fact, some may not even be aware that communities such as these exist. However, they play an important part in understanding the role that spirituality can play in community service.
For years, there has been debate on the role of religions versus government in providing social services. Those who prefer limited government tend to promote policies that take charity work out of the public domain, preferring to put community service responsibilities in the hands of faith-based charities. Proponents of this path say that faith-based programs are better equipped to deal with community issues due to their size, experience, and lower administrative costs. Critics contend that transferring responsibilities to spiritual organizations leads to bias as to which people are assisted.
