Recently passengers on a San Francisco train got a rather unpleasant surprise after learning the moving railroad car was traveling down the tracks without a driver.
The train had just entered a tunnel when an alert passenger noticed it was moving by itself and quickly pulled the emergency brake. Fortunately no one was injured and the train arrived safely at the next station.
An investigation has been launched to determine whether or not the driver pulled the emergency brake before exiting the train, which is part of standard safety protocol.
It is also being checked to see if the locomotive had some kind of previously undetected mechanical issues which led to the bizarre incident. According to the director of transit for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency the automatic control system assisted in the safe route to the next station, as it was activated when the doors closed.
