Pope Francis Tops Most Talked About List

2013-11-15 451

Pope Francis is the most talked about person in the Internet.

Pope Francis has the most talked about name on the Internet.

He’s bigger than Kate Middleton, President Obama, and Ed Snowden. For perspective, neither Miley Cyrus nor Justin Bieber even cracked the top 15.

The Pope also made the top 5 in the single word category with his Twitter handle, @pontifex, ranking 4th behind 404 – the code indicating something’s gone awry, fail, and hashtag.

In that group, his was the only specific personal reference in top 20.

The list was compiled by the Global Language Monitor, a Texas-based company that has been collecting and organizing the Internet’s most-used words and phrases for 14 years.

They do it by analyzing English-based social media and blogs as well as 275 thousand media outlets.

Once gathered, the data is sorted into three categories – name, word, and phrase.

Phrase is the only category in which the Pope didn’t show.

That classification was dominated by Toxic Politics, Federal Shutdown, and Gobal Warming/Climate Change.

The previous Pope wasn’t among the biggest names or topics in last year’s analysis, but the biblical end-of-days prophecy of Armageddon and Apocalypse did garner the top spot in the word category.
