Dogs have a reputation for wandering and exploring. However one man in Washington recently got quite a surprise after his dog brought home a human body part.

According to the canine owner, Bill Flowers, his pooch named Liberty dragged home a dismembered leg, complete with the knee and toes. 93-year-old Flowers realized it was a human extremity after witnessing Liberty standing over the leg in the backyard.

According to Flowers, the leg, which was grey, had been severed about four inches down from the buttocks. At first, the elderly man was terrified of what would happen if the police were called, so he buried the leg in his yard, however once he told his daughter about it, she urged him to immediately contact law enforcement.

The Thurston County sheriff's office decided to outfit Liberty with a tracking collar and also enlisted five other search dogs along with over two dozen human volunteers.

The trained K9s were able to find a pelvis, skull and rib cage in the woods near Flowers' home on the Nisqually Indian Reservation. A pathologist is now working to examine the remains and determine the gender along with the tool used to dismember the body.
