Torrential rain from a weakened Typhoon Haiyan has battered southern China’s Guangxi Autonomous Region and Hainan Province affecting over 12,000 people. Nearly 800 have been evacuated. The storm has so far killed four people in southern China.
China’s national weather authority issued a severe rainstorm alert saying the risk of floods and strong gales remain high.
Floods resulting from the downpours have caused infrastructure damages and losses estimated at 2 million yuan – the equivalent of 500,000 euros.
Haiyan is the 30th and strongest typhoon to hit China this year.
It is also the strongest storm ever to hit Quang Ninh province on the north west coast of Vietnam, home to the popular tourist destination Halong Bay.
Authorities in Vietnam have evacuated over 800,000 people in 11 central provinces to safe zones, according to the government’s website.
