Relief efforts in the Philippines begin

The first batch of aid from the World Food Programme is loaded into a cargo plane in Malaysia.

It's the first wave of assistance headed to the Philippines after a powerful typhoon killed an estimated 10,000 people and displaced more than 600,000.

The cargo includes generators, water tanks and storage tents.

Many countries have pledged millions of dollars in assistance.

But it will be a while before aid reaches the ravaged towns in the central Philippines.

Relief operations are hampered because roads, airports and bridges have been destroyed in the typhoon.

The United Nations said some survivors had no food, water or medicine.

Typhoon Haiyan - one of the most powerful storms on record to make landfall - swept through six central Philippine islands on Friday.

In the early hours of Monday Haiyan made landfall in Vietnam.

Even though the typhoon has weakened, six people were killed in central Vietnam, during heavy winds and storms.
