57-year-old Rosa Martinez, whose professional position is reportedly as principal of a private school in Houston, has been accused of severely neglecting her pets. The troubling situation was brought to the attention of authorities after Martinez took her three pet dogs to the Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care, a city shelter and adoption facility.

Two of the canines were in terrible shape, but neither more so than the third pooch whose injured rear hind leg appeared to have deteriorated so badly it basically rotted off.

The tan Maltese and Poodle mix was left with only had two functioning legs as her front left paw had bones protruding through the skin.

When Martinez was questioned by police, she claimed to have been preoccupied with work and non-profit organizations, leaving her too busy to address the poor health of her dogs.

The other two dogs were malnourished and had numerous infections. All three animals were sent to Red Collar Rescue for veterinary treatment. Martinez has now been charged with cruelty to animals.

She said the charges against her were “unfair” and claimed to have done nothing wrong.
