Volcano ruins crops in Indonesia

Farmers in Indonesia's Sumatra province said their crops have been ruined, as Mount Sinabung continues to spew volcanic ash over farmland and villages.

The volcano has erupted at least three times in the past three months, forcing hundreds of villagers to evacuate the area.

An eruption on Tuesday (November 5) lasted about 20 minutes and sent volcanic ash 3,000 meters into the sky from its crater, authorities said.

Nearby villages have been coated in a thick layer of ash, causing severe damage to this year's harvest.

"Around this area there are thousands of hectares of lost crops, mostly chili peppers, potatoes, cabbages, tomatoes and oranges. They are all damaged and covered in ash," said farmer Muhdi Tarigan.

The local government in north Sumatra has provided four temporary shelters, where over 1,500 residents have taken refuge.
