Twenty-four people were crushed to death by a stampede of approximately 100,000 worshipers in Eastern Nigeria.

Dozens more were injured.

SOUNDBITE: Eye Witness, Osmond Okoli saying (Igbo):

"There were some people that fell, and we were told not to step on them. But those behind did not know what happened, and as they were coming out it appeared that they were being pushed, they now fell on us, and then we all began to shout from the ground. There were too many people."

They gathered for a church service marking All Souls Day. Nineteen of the dead are women.

It isn't clear what triggered the panic. Enormous religious services are common in the country of around 170 million, which is split between Christians and Muslims.
