Shaa'ir + Func (Monica Dogra and Randolph Correia), with session musicians Aditya Ashok on drums and P-Man on bass, were at The Ziro Music Festival on its second day to blast their fans away with their energetic performance.
Arguably the most successful indie bands in India right now, Shaa'ir + func are certainly on their way to being the most prolific. Formed officially in 2007, Shaa'ir + func, commonly known as S&F, have already garnered recognition as VH1's top emerging artists of 2007, best independent artists of 2008 (VH1), nominations from the AVIMA foundation as Best Dance Act in South-East Asia in 2009, and recognition from the Jack Daniel Rock Awards for best female front-woman of a band. Sidenote, their record release party for Mantis was labeled, "Gig of the year" by widely followed NH7 magazine, India's first and only Indie Music Blog at the end of 2010. They were also named "India's Most Important Band" by the Sunday Guardian after completing their 2011 "I am, We are, You is..." tour in India.
In three years, whilst actively touring throughout India, the UK, and the East coast of the US, S&F wrote and released three successful albums, New Day: The Love Album, and Light Tribe and Mantis. Their music includes a heavy dose of experimentation within the popular and cutting edge genres of dance/funk/electronic/and rock music.
Ziro is situated in Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh, 167 kms from the capital Itanagar. It can be reached via road from Guwahati or Dibrugarh towns in Assam.
A spectacular location, open air gigs, campfires, tents and living in the outdoors amidst picturesque landscapes are just some of the things that wait to refresh your mind at Ziro. Artistes from across the country met likeminded individuals hailing from different parts of the globe. Last year, the festival saw over 150 musicians, artists, and creative minds be a part of this cultural celebration.
This year, Ziro Festival of Music's second edition saw a great curated line-up of musicians such as Whirling Kalapas from Mumbai, Lee Ranaldo and Stevel Shelley from USA, Menwhopause from Delhi, Sky Rabbit from Mumbai, Imphal Talkies from Imphal, Dosser's Urge from Shillong, Shaair + Func from Mumbai, Yesterdrive from Arunachal and many more.
Just 167km from the capital, Itanagar, Ziro is one of the oldest towns in Arunachal Pradesh. Situated in a valley, it is at a height of over 5500 feet above sea level, with a beautiful view of the mountains that surround it.
Ziro is primarily home to the Apatanis -- simple, friendly and hospitable people with an interesting culture and legacy. They are a non-nomadic, agrarian tribe who share a responsible relationship with nature. Apatanis cultivate permanent wet land cultivations instead of dry land cultivations which involves burning forests. Ziro valley is lush with paddy farms and is known for its unique paddy cum fish cultivation where using traditional irrigation methods, farmers rear fish in the knee-deep water. Keeping them company are the adorable, shy, and harmless Indian Bisons.
