Medical procedures are becoming more innovative and advanced with each passing year. In a shocking report, a 17-year-old girl in southeast China's Fujian Province recently received a face transplant.

Surgeons successfully carried out the operation after they grew a new face on her chest. The female was left disfigured at the age of five due to a fire. She lost a portion of her ear, chin and eyelids in the blaze.

Sadly, her family was unable to afford treatment after the traumatic incident. Just last year, when she was 16, doctors proposed a radical solution the help the young woman.

They wanted to grow new facial features on her chest using tissue grafted from her own leg. The girl’s surgeon detailed the process stating “First, we took a piece of blood vessel fascia from her thigh and implanted it in her chest. Then we inserted a skin expander beneath the part of skin where the blood vessel fascia was planted, so that the part could expand and produce enough skin for her new face.”

Doctors believe the scars left behind by the operation will completely heal up within several weeks.
