Celebrities rushed to offer their condolences on Twitter after hearing singer and musician, Lou Reed died following complications from a liver transplant earlier this year.

Online tributes poured in after a message sent earlier in the day on Reed's Twitter and Facebook pages read simply, "The Door."

"Devastating news," read a tweet from singer Iggy Pop, while actress Mia Farrow expressed her gratitude.

British rock band The Who said, "R.I.P. Lou Reed. Walk on the peaceful side."

Miley Cyrus also used social media to express her shock.

Reed's band, Velvet Underground, became one of the most influential in rock by fusing art and music in collaboration with artist Andy Warhol in 1960s New York.
