Scuba diver Andrew Houston was found drowned near the Brighton Baths in Victoria, Australia with 30 kilograms of abalone in a bag, the Herald Sun reported.
Houston, who did not have an abalone license, went out on a dive on Sunday morning.
On Monday police divers found his body lying face-down in full scuba diving equipment including a wetsuit, weight-belt, air compressor, tank and mask.
It is still unknown what happened to him while he was under the water.
According to reports he was carrying a bag with 30 kg of abalone inside, but it has not been ruled out that the weight of the illegal haul could have contributed to the man's death.
