Much of Syria under blackout after attack on gas pipeline

Syria has been in the shadow of war for two and a half years, but on Wednesday much of the country was under a literal blackout.

It happened after rebels reportedly attacked a gas pipeline that feeds a regional power station.

One Damascus resident who wanted to remain anonymous said "The whole city just went dark".

Amateur video posted online purports to show the capitol Damascus during the blackout as flames, reportedly from the pipeline, burn in the distance.

Reuters cannot independently verify the video.

But a monitoring group that using sources from both sides of Syria's civil war said the explosion was caused by rebel artillery on a gas pipeline, near the international airport outside Damascus.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also said other parts of Syria were also experiencing power outages, including coastal cities in the west and parts of Aleppo province in the north.
