Threatening letters to New York mayor test positive for ricin

2013-10-22 2

Two threatening letters sent to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his gun control group were found to contain traces of the deadly poison ricin, police said on Wednesday. The two letters, both addressed to Mr. Bloomberg, contained identical contents and were sent anonymously. One of the letters was opened in New York and the other in Washington D.C.

The packages were found to contain an oily substance, orange or pink in hue. Emergency workers who handled the letters showed minor symptoms of ricin exposure. Ricin is found naturally in castor beans, and can be lethal from exposure to a small amount causing fluid build up in the lungs. The discovery of the letters comes just weeks after letters containing ricin were mailed to President Obama and other government officials.
