As the day unfolds, Numpi goes to the school bus stop after getting ready and catches the school bus at 8am. Going to school in Ziro valley, which is home to the progressive Apatani tribe, is the same as anywhere else in the world. At the same time, for a place as remote as Ziro, the education system is very developed and it has given the population more opportunities in the competitive outside world. Ziro has the highest number of schools in the whole state.
The Apatani, or Tanii, are a tribal group of people living in the Ziro valley in the Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh in India. However more Apatanis live outside this valley, making the total population approximately 60,000 all over the state.
Apatani women carry out the household chores of gathering both wild and kitchen garden vegetables, cooking, fetching water, pounding rice, cleaning houses, washing clothes and utensils, nursing, looking after infants and children, ginning (clothes) and spinning of cotton, and other jobs associated with the household. In the field, the Apatani woman carries out the tasks that include gardening, seeding, transplanting of paddy and millet, weeding of fields, and other activities. At home, the internal family income is controlled by a woman. But the man also has his part of duty in looking after cultivation activities, and acts as the head of family in society.
Ziro is a census town in Lower Subansiri district in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It has been a favorite town for World Heritage Site for a number of years now. In a meeting of Archeological Survey of India (ASI) on December 12, 2012 it was shortlisted for inclusion in Tentative List for further nomination to UNESCO for inscription in the World Heritage Site.
Ziro has the highest number of Schools in Arunachal Pradesh. There are more than hundred private and Government Schools and one undergraduate school-Saint Claret College- established by Claretian Missionaries. Ziro has an average literacy rate of 66%, lower than the national average of 74.04%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 60%.
