Each night at about 10, residents on the western end of Southampton Water begin to hear a low, droning noise that keeps many in the English community awake into the night.

It’s been going on for months, but due to the great number of industrial plants and processing facilities in the area, neither of the two environmental agencies tasked with finding the source have been able to do so.

For now, the people living in the Industrial Waterside part of the city are coping the best they can.

Some say they’re sleeping on the couches of friends and relatives who live on the other side of town.

Others have been frequenting doctors’ offices either looking for sleeping pills or requesting an exam, convinced that they’re suffering from tinnitus.

One woman said she feels that it may be time for her to think about retiring early as she just can’t cope with her days anymore.

Hoping to move the discovery of the source along, a resident said she began doing her own detective work, identifying likely suspects and calling around to see if work was being done in the area, but so far no leads have panned out.
