Dilip Sarkar, a former Communist Party legislator, was out for a morning walk in the industrial city of Burnpur when gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on him. A female assailant shot the former politician twice at close range. When Sarkar attempted to make a call on his mobile phone, the male driver shot him twice more, before fleeing.
Sankar was shot four times in the chest and abdomen. He died on the way to the hospital. India's Communist Party blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress for the 65-year-old's death.
