Seven Taliban insurgents armed with guns and explosives clashed with security forces near the airport in the Afghan capital early Monday morning, according to Reuters. The militants took up positions inside a five-storey building under construction just north of Kabul's international airport. The gunmen fired shots at buildings on the section of the heavily-armed airport maintained by international forces.

Afghan police forces later cleared the building, killing all seven of the insurgents. The Taliban, claiming responsibility for the attack, said the attack was intended to target Americans at the airport.
