Running into a wild bear typically makes for a dramatic story. For one man in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, his black bear tale has a happy ending.

Gilles Cyr thankfully survived the ordeal after the wild animal walked out of the woods and attacked him. Cyr grabbed the bear’s tongue as part of the frantic efforts to fend off the creature and save his life.

Cyr stated “His mouth was wide open right in front of my face so the last thing I remember I had his tongue in my hand and I didn’t want to let go because he was trying to fight me off.”

While using its claws to strike Cyr, the bear was also biting his own tongue. Cyr claimed he had grabbed the animal's tongue out of instinct and amazingly it paid off because he was able to escape and run behind a nearby tree.

The bear initially followed him but then seemed to lose interest and walked away. The animal managed to claw Cyr’s stomach and bite his knee. He received treatment for his injuries at a local hospital.
