Italy's navy and coastguard have brought around 300 migrants safely to shore on the island of Lampedusa.
Many of the people were from Eritrea, Somalia and Syria, including more than 30 children.
The successful operation came a day after the Italian government announced that it would be deploying ships, helicopters and unmanned drones to prevent the deaths of migrants arriving by sea.
