Early warnings and better emergency evacuations helped reduce the death toll as Cyclone (FIL-IN) Phailin blew through parts of eastern India Saturday.

Trees were fallen and some temporary structures were destroyed, but the death toll is only five so far- relatively limited- considering some 12 million people were in the path of the storm.

Officials had been expecting the worst after 10,000 people died from a cyclone in the same region 14 years ago.

The storm will remain strong as it continues inland, but it's weakening, officials say.
